Kristin Coburn
Kristin is the daughter of the renowned Australian artist John Coburn.
In her paintings Kristin allows the strong influences of her father's work to come through with her use of rich,"vibrating" colour and symbolic shapes.
Whilst growing up Kristin was taught to paint by her father, and as a young adult studied art formally at the National Art School gaining a Diploma of Art and later a Bachelor of Fine Art.
The 70's colour field painting is a strong influence to me, especially the work of Frank Stella who coined the phrase "what you see - is what you see".
The forms are flattened onto the two-dimensional canvas and mostly resist any reference to figure and background tensions.
"There is an underlying spirituality in the intensity of the colour and also in the fact that mostly the paintings are about reflection and about an experience of life that has been coalesced into its essence" says Kristin
Kristin has been been accepted as a finalist in the 2008 Blake Prize for religious works.
